  1. Also, in the rollingstone.com article dated May 26, 2016 titled "40 Best Science Fiction TV shows of All Time" it has this to say about The Original Star Trek which came in at First Place
the article said "Nearly every word of its opening monologue entered the popular parlance. Nearly every nuance of its actor’s performances became (in)famous. Nearly every science-fiction series to come afterwards owes it a huge debt, up to and including the oh-so-similarly titled Star Wars. Yes, Gene Roddenberry's groundbreaking show is the sun around which the entire SF genre orbits. Its yin-and-yang leads, hotheaded Captain James T. Kirk and coolly logical science officer Mr. Spock, rightfully made actors William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy icons. Its aliens and enemies — Tribbles and Klingons and Khan, oh my! — remain indelibly entertaining. And its muscular, humane cold-war liberalism still holds up, as does its New Frontier zeal for exploration and optimism. May the Starship Enterprise never stop boldly going into the hearts and minds of the sci-fi faithful. STC"

Originally, Roddenberry envisioned the USS Enterprise to land on various planets, but it turned out to be too expensive as it would require them to build expensive sets. The next idea was to use shuttles - but when filming began, the full-sized shooting model wasn't ready. So, they came up with the idea of "beaming down" the crew via a teleportation device and thus the transporter was born! What can we say about James T. Kirk that hasn’t been said already? Equal parts charismatic diplomat, fiery captain, respected leader, and ladiesman, Kirk was the key to many of Starfleet’s successes.

Often compared to a reckless cowboy for his improvisations and rule-bending (or breaking), Kirk showed his crew that deviating from the expected course to do what’s right is a valuable trait, and this rubbed off on just about everyone who served under his command. Sure, he may not be the model Starfleet captain, but that certainly doesn’t mean he isn’t one of the best. "

  29. 1. The website screenrant.com on September 29, 2018 has an article by Jason Wojnar titled "7 Plot Twists That Hurt Star Trek (And 13 That Saved It)" the article says the death of Kirk in Star Trek: Generations hurt the franchise, with the article saying "
"Star Trek: Generations represents a particular low point for the franchise. This is made all the more painful by the fact that, as of now, it is William Shatner's last performance as Captain Kirk. The actual moment of his ascension off the mortal coil is well done, as Shatner is one of the finest actors of all time.

However, if the most famous Captain of the Enterprise had to be taken out, then it should have been in a movie where he takes center stage and isn't simply a supporting character.

Shatner himself had reservations about Kirk kicking the bucket, but still acted in the film, unlike Leonard Nimoy who turned down the chance to direct and took no part in Generations." Plus the article says that the ending to "The City on the Edge of Forever" helped to Save the Franchise, with the article saying
    "
From the get go, Star Trek established itself as a franchise that does not play by the rules. A prime example of this is the Harlen Ellison penned "City on the Edge of Forever" from The Original Series' first season.

The time travel episode boils down to Kirk having to let a woman he has fallen in love with lose her life in an automobile accident in order to correct a broken timeline. One would expect the heroic Captain to find a solution that resolves the timeline and let Edith Keeler continue living, but no such answer is found. In a time when most shows had happy endings, this episode was a punch in the gut, but one that showed how the show was revolutionizing television writing. "

The saga, which pits the iconic characters against each other – and marks the first-ever crossover between The Original Series, The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine and Voyager -- is written by the tandem of Scott and David Tipton (Star Trek: The Next Generation – Mirror Broken), and features art by David Messina (Cloak and Dagger, Star Trek: Countdown).

President Donald Trump's idea for a Space Force that
"In his discussion with Space.com, Shatner also shared his opinions on the Space Force, a proposed sixth military branch that would be dedicated entirely to security in space. Shatner said he's "of two minds" on the matter.

On one hand, the Air Force wasn't a separate branch initially, "and I suppose traditionalists would have said, 'What are we doing, more bureaucracy?'" Shatner said, likening the creation of the U.S. Air Force to that of the proposed Space Force. "There is an attempt to say, 'There we go, another part of the government and more taxes and more people.'"

However, he said, "on the other hand, space is becoming a separate place. … We're now realizing that shooting wars may very well … be a thing of the past." Shatner spoke about how traditional warfare might be increasingly replaced by "electronic warfare," or cyberattacks, in which countries target and attack everything from electrical grids to satellites and secure information.

"I think that's a good idea," Shatner said about Space Force as a means to combat these emerging forms of warfare, "but they'd have to put more things in it than just a rocket going into the sky. … If the Space Force was all the modern things that aren't bullets, [if] all the separate and secret means of warring on an enemy were separate, that could be a good idea."

So, essentially, Shatner is on board with Space Force, though he is partially hesitant about how it might be executed".

    "
As though anyone else was going to be in the top spot. Kirk is the best captain, hands down. He set the standard for everyone else to follow. He was daring, but not a hothead. Intelligent, but also compassionate. And he never let the rules get in the way of doing what was right. There's a reason William Shatner's performance and the character's roguish charm have become iconic.

    Kirk's adaptable.

It doesn't matter if he's fighting a giant lizard alien or dealing with a mountain of tribbles. He can handle whatever you throw at him, and that's the guy you want captaining a starship. " And the Article says about the Reboot Kirk played by Chris Pine in the 2009 Film that "He's cockier and a bit too impressed by himself, but he's still got a good heart underneath it, He's just a different flavor of Kirk, always there for his crew. Whether it means sacrificing his own life or crashing his ship with him still inside it so they can escape the reboot Kirk is rougher, but he never gives up"

  53. There was actually a undeveloped episode for Star Trek: The Original Series titled "Hitler's Father"
    "Hitler's Father"Edit
This story outline, dated 21 March 1966, sees a temporal experiment result in a 19th century man known as Alois Schicklgruber accidentally beamed aboard the Enterprise, with the crew entertaining and befriending him as they work on a way to return him to his own time. Soon, however, the crew realises that in later life, he will change his name to "Alois Hitler" and have a son known as Adolf Hitler. This results in a dispute among the crew, with a Jewish geneticist advocating that the crew forcibly sterilize Schicklgruber so as to prevent the birth of his infamous son, but the Enterprise historian arguing that he cannot be blamed for the crimes of his son, especially seeing how he died when Adolf was only 13 years old.

No writer is credited on the outline, though given that it appears as part of Gene Roddenberry's archive, he may have been the author. The story does not appear to have progressed beyond its initial outline.[16] there was also another episode of TOS that was undeveloped titled "Japan's Triumph" which would have showed Japan winning World War II and creating an alternate timeline, This information I also obtained from the Memory Alpha Website

There were some plans for a fourth season of Star Trek: The Original Series, including a second episode featuring Kor, that would have aired 1969-1970.
During the second season of The Original Series, Gene Roddenberry and Darlene Hartman (writer of unproduced episode "Shol") came up with an idea for a spin-off series entitled Hopeship, which would have been about the voyages of a Federation hospital vessel. The series would have included Doctor M'Benga (Booker Bradshaw) in the regular cast. Despite the series concept never being realized within the Star Trek universe, Hartman later wrote the idea in the form of a novel in 1994. (These Are the Voyages: TOS Season Two

The production of this film, which culminated over a period of a year, made it as far as a written script and a few pieces of conceptual artwork. Star Trek: First Contact is regarded as one of TNG's best movies, and for good reason. Despite all of the time that has passed, Picard is still traumatized by the violation of his mind and body when he was possessed by the Borg. When the Borg return to threaten all of mankind by traveling into Earth's past, Picard takes the crew of the Enterprise-E to follow and stop them.

At one point, Picard gazes down at planet Earth and sees the coast of Australia. However, this is a problem with this: New Zealand is missing. How artists could have misplaced or forgotten an entire giant island country is beyond us. Maybe they just thought the planet looked better without it? Or maybe something happens to New Zealand in Star Trek's universe. More likely, somebody just forgot about New Zealand." As we said before, the redesigned Enterprise of the reboot was very controversial. Many fans took exception to exterior changes, including the placement of the warp nacelles and the overall size. However, it was the inside of the ship that got the most attention.

The new bridge looks nothing like the old one. In fact, many fans noted that the place looked like one of Apple’s “genius bars.” It turns out that this is not a coincidence: designer Ryan Church was apparently quite inspired by his new iPhone (technology which still felt pretty new in 2009), and that Apple aesthetic bled over into the set design.

    "
    Influence on Star Trek[edit]
A few of the monsters reappeared in Gene Roddenberry's Star Trek series later in the 1960s. The moving microbe beast in "The Probe" later was used as the 'Horta' in "The Devil in the Dark", and operated by the same actor, Janos Prohaska. The "ion storm" seen in "The Mutant" (a projector beam shining through a container containing glitter in liquid suspension) became the transporter effect in Star Trek. The black mask from "The Duplicate Man", is used by the character Dr. Leighton in "The Conscience of the King". The Megasoid, from "The Duplicate Man" and the Empyrean from "Second Chance" (1964) were seen briefly near Captain Christopher Pike in other cages in the Star Trek pilot "The Cage".

The process used to make pointed ears for David McCallum in "The Sixth Finger" was reused in Star Trek as well. Lead actors who would later appear in the regular cast of Star Trek included Leonard Nimoy, who appeared in two episodes ("Production and Decay of Strange Particles" and "I, Robot") and William Shatner who appeared (in the episode "Cold Hands, Warm Heart") as an astronaut working on a Project Vulcan. Actors who would subsequently appear in the regular supporting cast of Star Trek were Grace Lee Whitney(episode "Controlled Experiment") and James Doohan (episode "Expanding Human"). Roddenberry was often present in The Outer Limits' studios, and hired several of its staff, among them Robert Justman and Wah Chang for the production of Star Trek.[6]

    "
"While the Constitution-class ship in Star Trek: The Original Series had its warp nacelles perched on struts at a 90-degree angle to the body of the ship, the refit angles the struts backward.

The result is a ship that looks more aerodynamic. One might say that the change was made simply because it “looked cooler that way,” but EC Henry points out that there’s actually a practical reason for the change supported by scenes from The Motion Picture.

Having the Nacelle struts at a 90-degree angle meant that had to dig deep into the ship, limiting the amount of room that could be dedicated to the ship's aft cargo bay. Angling them back allows them to be attached to the ship at a higher, thicker point on the ship's hull, thus leaving room for a much larger cargo bay and even elevators for moving shuttles up from a lower bay to where the cargo bay door is. And the film does feature shots of Starfleet crewman working in this large cargo bay area with elevators." Kirk has also been mentioned in song, in the 1979 song "Where's Captain Kirk?" by Spizzenergi, and later the 1984 English adaptation of "99 Luftballons" as well as in the German original by Nena[79][80]. More recently, in 1998’s That Don't Impress Me Much, Shania Twain puts forth Captain Kirk as one of the unattainable ideals to whom her unappealingly haughty suitor apparently thinks himself equal.

In 2002, Kirk's captain's chair from the original Star Trek was auctioned for $304,000.[86]

Captain Kirk has also been portrayed in feline form. First, anthropomorphically, in two episodes of the 1975 Filmation Saturday morning animated children’s series The Secret Lives of Waldo Kitty. The cartoon is based around the title character’s fantasies about being various heroic felines based on popular culture icons. Later came scientific illustrator Jenny Parks' 2017 book Star Trek Cats, in which Kirk is depicted as an orange tabby cat.[88][89] -

Wikipedia said the following about the character of Kirk as played by William Shatner & Chris Pine "According to Shatner, early Star Trek reviewers described his performance as "wooden", with most of the show's acting praise and media interest going to Nimoy.[31] However, Shatner's mannerisms when portraying Kirk have become "instantly recognizable"[52] and Shatner won a Saturn Award for Best Actor in 1982 for The Wrath of Khan.[57] Star Trek II director Nicholas Meyer said Shatner "gives the best performance of his life" in The Wrath of Khan.[58] The Guardian called Pine's performance of Kirk an "unqualified success",[59] and The Boston Globe said Pine is "a fine, brash boy Kirk".[60] Slate, which called Pine "a jewel", described his performance as "channel[ing]" Shatner without being an impersonation.[61]

  86. 1. Wikipedia says about the Star Trek fan production Star Trek: New Voyages, originally called "Star Trek: Phase II" regarding the legendary nature of Kirk and his crew
    "
The Star Trek: Phase II fan production, originally titled Star Trek: New Voyages, portrays the further voyages of the original Enterprise crew. The series' creators feel that "Kirk, Spock, McCoy and the rest should be treated as 'classic' characters like Willy Loman from Death of a Salesman, Gandalf from The Lord of the Rings or even Hamlet, Othello or Romeo. Many actors have and can play the roles, each offering a different interpretation of said character".[90]

James Cawley played Kirk in most of the ten episode Phase II series from its beginning in 2004 before replacing himself with actor Brian Gross. Wired observes that while Cawley's depiction "lacks Shatner's vulnerability", the actor has enough swagger "to be passable in the role".[91] Cawley's portrayal was well-known enough at Paramount that a group of Star Trek: Enterprise writers called for Cawley's attention at a science fiction convention by shouting "Hey, Kirk!" at him while Shatner sat nearby.[91]

By using two communicators tuned to the right frequencies, together the devices could set up sympathetic vibrations, which could cause events such as a rock slide, under the right conditions, as Kirk and Spock found out on the planet Capella IV as seen in the TOS episode "Friday's Child" also when Kirk & Spock were captured by Ekosians in "Patters of Force" and their communicators were taken away and disassembled, Spock was able to recombine them into one working communicator. While it was only able to reach nine points into the low-frequency band, it was still enough to contact the Enterprise for assistance, and as show creator Gene Roddenberry and his production crew planned the outline for the show before it went into production, an early thought was that the communicator might also be used as a universal translation device,

Kirk proposes to block the entrance with a sonic disruption; two communicators linked together can produce a sympathetic vibration. This will cause a rock slide, sealing the entrance and buying time, as the Capellan search party will be forced to go around the hills to the other side. Several large rocks tumble down from the disruption, injuring many Capellans

What I liked was the element I had come up with of the captain going down with his ship, which was rejected as a notion in the 24th century. That was a strong line for me – a captain alone with his ship. My theory is that what Picard loved most was the Enterprise. I don't think the staff agreed with me. I think they thought it was too much of a 20th or 18th century concept, or Kirk." ‘Cause I’m gonna miss you, Shelly-bean, even though you creep the bejeezus out of me "Where No Sheldon Has Gone Before" was a short fan novella based on Star Trek: The Original Series, and based on a fan written story (written by Sheldon) depicting, when Spock takes Sheldon (who was then 10-years-old at the time he wrote it) from his home on the 'Backwoods of East Texas' to the 23rd Century to help the Crew of the USS Enterprise (NCC-1701) save the Galaxy. Sheldon also converts the first 5th of the Novella into the First Act of a play as part of his acting lessons from Penny; however, when he portrayed his mother, Mary and tried to act emotional for the scene where 10-year-old Sheldon left for the 23rd Century, it caused Sheldon to actually emotionally break down into sobs. Due to this, Penny has to tell his mother that she "broke her son". Sheldon then tells his mother "Mommy, I love you! Don't let Spock take me to the future!

One scarcely knows where to begin. The show never rose much above 20th place in the weekly Nielsen's, True, Star Trek had always been a ratings failure by network prime-time standards, but this "failure" still was watched by 20 million people a week for three years, it flopped in prime time became the greatest syndication success in television history. For twenty years, it wouldn't die .. Before Star Trek, there was no mass audience for science fiction, Star Trek created it, The Technology of the Enterprise and all that it implied.. Faster than Light Travel, Transporters, etc, had passed into folklore, and had become familiar and as American as apple pie, and paved the way for George Lucas to create Star Wars. In Short Star Trek transcended television. It was no longer defined as those seventy-eight episodes of a canceled TV show running over and over again. It had become a popular myth imprinted upon mass culture, as surely as Robin Hood, or Billy the kid, or Cinderella, a modern legend, a set of mythic archetypes, and Star Trek earned a permanent place in our cultural life"

One word, Mojo, Kirk as seen in The Original Series, and his movies, but also the Reboot Kelvin Timeline films with Chris Pine, Kirk has more Mojo, in his pinky finger than Picard did in his entire life, the word Mojo was also made famous by the 1999 Film "Austin Powers: The Spy who Shagged Me" see this definition from Urban Dictionary
"Mojo means your influence, confidence or personal charisma. It was originally a slang term from the US associated with the music and dance culture, but has entered the English as well as the American language and is being used more widely. It has also taken on an additional meaning of personal confidence and charisma with regard to sexual relationships. The word Mojo itself probably derives from African-American language where it refers to a personal talisman or witchcraft charm, and is itself derived from the word Moco used by the Gullah people meaning witchcraft. The word First received widespread exposure in the 1957 recording of the song Got My Mojo Working by Muddy Waters."

    "
Forty years (and several sequels and a reboot) later, the Michael Myers’ mask based on a Captain Kirk mask made of William Shatner’s face in a little-known movie called The Devil’s Rain would become the inspiration for the masks worn by The Whisperers on AMC’s The Walking Dead, according to Greg Nicotero, producer, director and special-effects supervisor on the series. From TV Guide:

The Whisperers have a very different design than usual walkers — they’re masks rather than makeup, which gives them a terrifying blank affect he likens to Michael Myers from the Halloween franchise. “The face doesn’t move, so you cannot judge any kind of emotion,” Nicotero continued. “So every time we shoot with a group of them, I look at them like, ‘that’s f—in’ weird, man.'”

In fact, Nicotero specifically opted against masks more akin those those in another Bryanston Distributing Company film. He “didn’t want them to look like Leatherface from The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, who’s wearing a primitive mask made of flayed skin. So instead, he gave the masks a bone structure. The masks have deep eye sockets so that the brow sticks out enough to create a shadow over the eyes “so that when you look at the faces… you get nothing there.”

In other words, while the Whisperers’ mask on The Walking Dead are obviously not modeled after William Shatner’s face, the masks do borrow the same deep-set dead eyes popular from the Meyers’ mask."

    "Spock in command, Kirk off-screen.
We know Spock is the next in line for Command of Enterprise, at one point he was even ahead of Kirk in line for the Enterprise, so we could carry on with Captain Spock in command, maybe even with a young Commander Will Decker taking the first officer’s chair.

This would be the least disruptive way forward, Kirk would still be mentioned and act as an off-screen character for the movies, leaving the door open for a return down the road, or maybe even a spin-off action adventure where during an ill-fated experiment aboard the station the Kirk’s are displaced in time and we get the James and George buddy movie we’ve been hearing about for years.

    RELATED PRODUCT
    Separating the crew
The more aggressive version of the path forward is to go right ahead and separate the crew, Sulu becomes Captain of the Excelsior, perhaps one or two faces go with him, Spock moves on to his role as Fleet Captain, running the Enterprise as a training ship, and McCoy is reluctantly forced out to some front line medical disaster on the edge of Federation Space.

Eventually they’re all reunited, as they solve the story-worthy problem that faced them shortly after the movie began, allowing us a chance for Scotty to grumble about the supposed Transwarp capabilities of the Excelsior, and McCoy to be terrified of getting beamed back to the ship.

This path leaves many possibilities open for the writers, it even allows for the growth of spin-offs ranging from Starfleet Academy, to the Excelsior Chronicles, to the Kirk time travel buddy pic." My point being that Kirk would never be truly gone, even if he isn't on-screen, he would still be mentioned and act as an off-screen character for the movies ,

"If Memory Serves" makes an unprecedented choice, which is just part of the show's ongoing drive to realign with the franchise's legacy.

    “Star Trek: Discovery”

    CBS All Access

[Editor’s note: The following contains spoilers for “Star Trek: Discovery” Season 2 Episode 8, “If Memory Serves.”]

The latest episode of “Star Trek: Discovery” begins with a choice that for “Trek” fans might be considered mindblowing: a “previously on ‘Star Trek'” sequence using footage that is 55 years old, and featuring long-deceased people playing roles now ceded to new actors.

Yes, to set up the events leading up to “If Memory Serves,” “Discovery” chose to use a minute of clips from “Star Trek: The Original Series” featuring Jeffrey Hunter as Captain Christopher Pike and Leonard Nimoy as Lieutenant Spock, during their first encounter with the mind-bending aliens of Talos IV. The sequence then leads into the episode proper, with these same characters now played by Anson Mount and Ethan Peck as they re-encounter these strange and mysterious beings — as well as the human-looking Vina (originally played by Susan Oliver, now played by Melissa George), with whom Pike made a connection during his first trip to that planet.

WITHIN OFFICIAL “TREK” CANON, THE TOS EPISODE “THE MENAGERIE” (FROM WHICH THE “PREVIOUSLY ON” FOOTAGE WAS DRAWN) OCCUPIES A COMPLICATED PLACE, AS IT REPURPOSED THE UNAIRED 1964 PILOT “THE CAGE” (FROM WHICH NEARLY EVERYONE EXCEPT NIMOY WAS RECAST) TO TELL A STORY OF THE ENTERPRISE’S EARLY DAYS, BEFORE KIRK TOOK ON THE ROLE OF CAPTAIN."

What do you find at the intersection between the quadrants of Star Trek and Dr. Seuss? Why, a fair-use lawsuit, of course! But thanks to a federal judge's ruling on Tuesday, that suit's supply of dilithium crystals might be running dangerously low.

Confused? Let's break it down. We've all heard of the 1990 Dr. Seuss (real name Theodor Geisel) book Oh, the Places You'll Go! It's an inspiring children's story often given as a gift to students graduating from high school or college.

But you might not have heard of Oh, the Places You'll Boldly Go!, a 2016 "mash-up" of Star Trek and Dr. Seuss. The book is the crowdfunded brainchild of ComicMix, a company that creates (as the name suggests) content related to comics and other works of fiction. In 2016, ComicMix's Glenn Hauman teamed up with longtime comics artist Ty Templeton and writer David Gerrold (real name David Jerrold Friedman), who wrote the renowned episode The Trouble with Tribbles for the original Star Trek series. They started a Kickstarter campaign to fund the project, eventually raising nearly $30,000, and considered Boldly to be "a parody, a mash-up, and a transformative work," according to an order issued Tuesday from Judge Janis Sammartino of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of California. When the Discovery arrived, they found Section 31 headquarters heavily fortified with mines and ready to destroy the starship if they approached. Pike was furious at Section 31's tactics, agreeing with Saru that the Federation doesn't employ weapons like mines. The captain confronted Cornwell and reminded her that, "Giving up our values in the name of security is to lose the battle in advance." He further pressed the Admiral, asking her if these changes in how Starfleet operates is why he and the Enterprise were sidelined from fighting in the Klingon War thousands of others died for. Cornwell's response was enlightening: "You sat out the war because if we'd lost to the Klingons, we wanted the best of Starfleet to survive. And as this conversation makes clear, that was you and all you represent." Pike was visibly taken aback from her glowing praise while the bridge crew nodded in approval, agreeing with Cornwell's sentiment about their new commander.

THE IMPORTANCE OF PIKE AND THE ENTERPRISE TO THE FEDERATION
It's no surprise that Starfleet decided that the Enterprise and her captain needed to be saved at all costs. Even by Star Trek: Discovery's relatively early point in Star Trek history - about a decade before Captain James T. Kirk's landmark five-year mission and all of the movies and spinoffs that would follow - the Enterprise carries a special significance. "

"Most significant about Generations was the death of Kirk, which Bill had a harder time handling than the fans. “It took me some time to think about how I wanted to play the scene and it required some self-examination,” he explains. “So it was very emotional for me. My coloring of the scene is based on my experience. All those thoughts we face only in our most stressful moments I had to think about, because I wanted to play the death of the character as honestly as I could. I forced myself to look at what it would feel like to die, how I would like to die, my fear of dying and what Captain Kirk would feel when he looked across the threshold. So I put that all together.”
At that point, the audience had been following Star Trek for nearly 30 years, but Bill didn’t feel that same sort of connection. “It hadn’t been 30 years of playing the character for me,” he notes. “It was three years doing the series, then 10 years go by and we do a movie for a few months, then we do a movie every two or three years for a couple of months. So it was all very intermittent, although the Star Trek comet trailed behind me. But to have people think of the character as an entity and to mourn the death as though it was a real person, that’s really gratifying.” The Article also states that There's No Stopping The Shat

At 88 years old, he’s still going strong. From my point of view,” he offers, “I’m grasping opportunities because you never know when it all might stop. Some people have said to me that time runs out for all of us and I should slow down. But is time going to run out any sooner or slower if I don’t do this? In fact, people who slow down — people who retire, to use that word — die. That honor goes to The Original Series episode “Metamorphosis,” where the Enterprise crew discover that the legendary pioneer’s lifespan has been mystically extended by more than a century.

And that a group of his friends who had been in the same cell — the only way that they could keep themselves alive was to play the Star Trek game.”

Shatner said he wasn’t sure what the veteran meant, so he asked to know more.

“These were episodes that these young soldiers had memorized over the years — and in some cases, they were strangers to each other — but they knew the plots and the dialogue and they would repeat the dialogue to each other and play an hour’s segment to each other of Star Trek. And in that manner, they kept themselves not only alive, but sane. And it was the most moving story of that kind that I’ve ever heard.”

Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan is one of the best Star Trek movies and it is also easily the most influential. Broken Dishes – A Deleted Scene

Many scenes were filmed for “City” that, in the end, weren't used or found themselves heavily trimmed as the episode was being assembled. We’ve counted about seven of them, and that includes the wonderful scene on the Roddenberry Vault Blu-ray set that shows Kirk and Edith talking on the staircase following Edith’s accidental trip down the stairs.

One of the scenes that was removed from “City” that, as far as we know, no longer exists anywhere, showed Kirk having an accident at the 21st Street Mission as he and Edith cleaned up. This deleted scene was scripted and filmed for the middle of the third act, and it was to have occurred between the scenes of Rodent killing himself with McCoy’s phaser and Kirk and Edith talking at the top of the staircase about man reaching the moon (both of which made it to air). The photo below shows a lost scene obtained from a Lincoln Enterprises film clip, and we’ve paired it with its description from the shooting script (in italics). Please note that this scene didn’t contain dialogue.

    SPOCK’S P.O.V.– KIRK AND EDITH

Kirk is coming through the outside door carrying a high pile of glasses and dishes in a tub. Edith holds the door, directs him to a bench so he can put them down. She tries to reach up to take some of the load, but Kirk pulls away, not allowing her to help. However, in pulling away, he promptly manages to drop half the dishes and glasses to the floor. A nerve ripping CRASH. As he stands there, looking in disgust at the mess of broken crockery, Edith reaches up to touch his shoulder comfortingly. At her touch, Kirk’s face changes, softens… a man caught by a stir of feeling for a woman.

  165. 1. The website closerweekly.com on May 8, 2019 has an article by Ed Gross titled "Star Trek 2009 Movie Celebrates Its 10th Anniversary: Behind-the-Scenes" and it says regarding Chris Pine being cast as Captain Kirk that "
Chris Pine is Captain James T. Kirk
APRIL WEBSTER (Casting Director): We weren’t afraid of recasting these iconic roles, but we knew it was going to be a challenge. We also knew we weren’t going to be able to match people exactly, but we did want to give at least a close indication to people; to give a sense of the characters they’ve known and loved for so long.

For Kirk we weren’t looking for someone doing a Shatner impersonation. We wanted somebody who would embody that spirit. Chris Pine did. He was a lifesaver, because we really wanted someone who could give us the cockiness, but still be likable. If you look at the old episodes of Shatner and that character, he was always cocky, but there was also something enormously appealing about him. We auditioned a lot of people all over the place, but there was something that he was able to bring in, that sort of swagger. Not that other people couldn’t get that, but Chris just fit the bill. We had narrowed it down to a couple of people and he became the guy. Just in watching him with each successive meeting, it was becoming more and more apparent to us.

BRYAN BURK (Producer): J.J. and I were in a casting session and there were three potential Kirks outside. Chris came in and couldn’t look less like William Shatner. He came in and he was amazing. It was also the weirdest thing in the world. He came in as himself, but then he started reading and he became that character. It was such an out of body experience. Coincidentally, Zachary Quinto, who had already been cast as Spock, was around. We asked them to read a scene together and they did. Instantly it was, like, “Yeah, there they are. Kirk and Spock.” It was the weirdest thing in the world and amazing."

    1. The article continues
"ZACHARY QUINTO (Actor, “Spock”): The other thing is that Chris and I knew each other before we did this film. We came to the table with the rapport already being forged. We have a lot of mutual friends and we both worked out with the same trainer before either of us got the movie. He’s a friend of ours and I’d be working out and he’d say, “My buddy Chris is on his way over.” “Oh yeah, I’ve heard about that guy. Never met him.” So we passed each other, then we met and we both ended up working on the film. So we had a history a little bit and built on it. I have a tremendous respect and affinity for Chris as a person and as an actor. We work really well together. We both come from a theater background and there’s a sort of understanding and short hand that comes from that mutual experience. We are, I believe, a good duo.

CHRIS PINE (Actor, “James T. Kirk”): When I heard I’d gotten the part, there’s a period of 15 to 20 minutes or so where you couldn’t be any more excited and you’re jumping up and down and you’re calling everybody you know, and your parents are planning celebratory dinners and all that. And then there’s months of kind of anxiety about the fact that you actually have to do it! And that there’s going to be a lot of scrutiny. So my response was a mixture of absolute excitement and absolute panic, but the great thing about working with the people involved with this project – J.J. Abrams especially – is that you never felt like there was this heavy responsibility on your shoulders. He always made sure that we were having fun and enjoying the experience, because it is a really unique experience that very few people get to have.

Making the character my own, it’s not like I had a checklist of things, like, “I should do this, I shouldn’t try to do that. These would be good things to emulate, and these would be good things to make my own.” I watched much of the original series to get a sense of the aesthetic and the relationship between the characters and what the series had already established, and then I just very simply read my script and tried to do the best job possible to bring to life the character that I read on the page"

Picard became an Admiral, which might be the problem
The voiceover of the person questioning Picard in the trailer doesn't address him as "Captain," but instead calls him "Admiral." This means that at some point after the end of Star Trek: Nemesis Picard got promoted.

Weirdly, this is something a time-displaced Captain Kirk told him not to do in the movie Star Trek: Generations. Here was what Kirk said to Jean-Luc: "Don't let the transfer you, don't let them promote you. Don't let them do anything that gets you off the bridge of that ship!"

Clearly though, at some point, Picard did get promoted, which could be why his life got screwed up." Picard failed to follow Kirk's advice from Star Trek: Generations, Picard was an Admiral before, but only in a fake future that Riker experienced in the TNG episode "Future Imperfect"

"Anyone remember the inexcusable film, Titan AE, where they ALLOWED the Drej to destory our Planet? That is exactly the same type of thing Jean-Luc Picard would do if the Drej came! Picard would allow the Drej to destroy Earth just like they did in Titan AE with lack of original thought! James Tibirius Kirk, on the other hand would be VERY upset with the idea that Titan AE presented. He would know that there is hope for Earth's survival against the mighty Drej Mothership, Alahenena. Kirk would have beaten the Drej in time to save Earth because he would quickly come up with the use of his engines and delfector dish on his refit Enterprise or Enterprise-A to drain the Alahenena and win, plus save our planet! That is because Kirk does not believe in the "no win" scenario, passing the Kobayasi Maru Test all three times he took it with flying colors. Titan AE is a lot more like a TNG Flick than a TOS Movie in its flavor in the depicted situation"
