 A Star Trek fan legally changed his name to James T. Kirk in 1974, and actually appeared as an Enterprise crew member in the recreation deck scenes in Star Trek: The Motion Picture, he also appeared in the 1997 documentary film "Trekkies"  also the 2016 film Star Trek: Beyond had a VFX, visual effects artist named James Kirk, see this Link, James T.   On the Wikipedia entry for the Star Trek franchise, it says that Gene Roddenberry when creating Star Trek: The Original series, was inspired by the satirical book Gulliver's Travels, published in 1726 by Irish writer & clergyman Jonathan Swift , the entry also says "The central trio of Kirk,Spock and McCoy from Star Trek: The Original Series was modeled on Classical mythological storytelling" referring to Classical Greco-Roman mythology, Greek & Roman mythology, the entry is here,  Star Trek
